Environmental Management Systems

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a structured system designed to help the oyster industry identify and manage environmental impacts and risks. The oyster farmers of Wapengo, Merimbula, Pambula and Wonboyn Lakes have collectively committed to implement an EMS in their estuaries to ensure the protection of the environment and the sustainability of the oyster industry.

The Sapphire Coast has a history of low population density and this has helped to keep our waterways clean. As urbanisation increases so does the risk of pollution of our rivers, lakes and ocean. We need to work together to maintain our water quality and this is the key reason for the adoption of an EMS by the oyster industry on the Sapphire Coast.

Impacts and risks can arise from the oyster industry’s own operations or from external sources. During the preparation of an EMS, both oyster cultivation and catchment activities were assessed as to the impact they have on the environment. Action plans have been developed to address impacts on the sustainability of the oyster industry.

State and local government agencies continue to work together with oyster farmers in the protection of our riparian areas and waterways. This includes extensive work on riverbank revegetation, weed control, drainage upgrades, track management, erosion control, road works and more.
